"Is it really so much to ask that churches and religious organizations be held accountable to the same laws as all other nonprofits?"
I don't get how it is even a question as to whether it is ok to allow religions to continue with their backwards human rights practices. If they are going to be an organization in this society, and expect to get special treatment, they need to follow the same anti-discrimination laws everyone else does.
For example, churches shouldn't be forced to perform gay marriages if they are against it, but they also shouldn't be allowed to hand out legally binding marriage certificates if they don't. They can keep their religious ceremony untouched, but if they are going to be an organization with the ability to give out legal documents, they need to play by the rules.
